Should we keep the Cantina as a part of the con? Building a new one will cost a grand or so.

It depends on if the hotel will allow you to serve anything from it. Having it as a dry bar, without even coke as an option, kind of sucked. It was a great place to hang out, but having nothing to drink there was a little disappointing. Could you do the free water there maybe?

I love the Cantina bar but it was way too hidden and enclosed this year. I vote if we can't server anything with it, even if it's just water or soda, then forget about it. I'd rather you spend that money to have a stage set up for photos than a room with nobody hanging out at haha

I love the cantina, but I'm pretty much of the same opinion, if its not usable its just not worth the expenditure.
Maybe if the hotel won't sell booze out of the cantina itself if the booze is at least next to the cantina? I think the cantina adds a really nice level of flair to the show but it needs to be a centerpiece to the show and definitely not hidden away otherwise its wasted.

I don't remember, but did the hotel last year let you sell anything there?!

The Westin wouldn't let us sell drinks there either but they DID allow the bowls of snacks. I got in trouble for that this year - the Hyatt has a strict NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR BEVERAGE policy. I think this kinda puts a nail in the Cantina's coffin. I do have a great idea to replace it though! There is a series of meeting rooms in one of the towers (so it's all windows and natural light) that I thought we could set up as a "Holo Deck" for photo ops. We could bring in different props and backgrounds to pose with. The thing is that groups would need to BUILD THEM and bring them in. We could also set up scenes in the holo deck, like an old west gambling hall. Just something cool for people to do and see. Let's hear your ideas!

I too missed the ability to actually drink at the Cantina Bar...
last year the location was much better... there were tables to sit down at.... and converse with people that you might not get to see too often.. this year, however, it wasn't so user friendly..
I really enjoyed it last year... the Cantina was a "destination"... this year it just seemed to be a pass through...

I agree with a few people's statement here too.
I had no clue where the cantina was until Saturday night. I had no idea you weren't allowed to serve alcohol there?!?!
But yeah it kinda kills the point of having the cantina if it's a dry bar. But I like it cuz no one else is doing it. LOL
As for the "Holodeck" great idea for the different costuming groups. However, who could you get to do the photos?
Anyhoo, All these ideas are great. If you have an idea in mind to replace the cantina (as sad as that sounds) i'm open to hear it.

It could be just there for people who want to take pictures themselves. I'd also put up a generic greenscreen background for people who want to do some chroma key work. As for the Cantina, yeah, it's cool to have, but if you can't sell drinks there, it kind of loses its purpose. Perhaps it, or parts of it, could be relegated to this "photo-ops room".

Well, like I said in another thread, I know a really good photographer who would probably come if he could charge a bit for professional photos.

I like the idea of just a 'made up' background and con-goers or perhaps even passers-by my want to stop and get their picture taken with characters like Darth Vader, The Scarlet Witch, Wolverine, Batman, etc. I think the green screen, while easy, would still require someone with photoshop abilities to chroma key them into a virtual background. I could do all that and more. But i'm thinking of time and ease of use. Painted backdrops or just a generic black or grey background would make people happy methinks. -River

We could also set up scenes in the holo deck, like an old west gambling hall. Just something cool for people to do and see. I like this idea, but I see two things that need to be considered. For the first, I guess I need a little clearing up, were people getting hassled by union guys for setup or not. I see bringing in prop scenery to be something that might cause issues if they were this year as these are big parts that will need to be brought in and assembled. If union people are going to get in the way, that kinda screws this idea because clubs aren't going to want to pay other people to set up their stuff. That's why the MWG never really gets any big projects off the ground because we can't use them often due to the shows we want to use them for we would have to pay to have somebody set up that we could do on our own. Second, I suggest some sort of compensation for groups that do participate in this, preferably a couple free weekend tickets per group, but those people would probably need to be considered volunteers. I think this an idea that could start small and build over time into something that could really become a draw for Cyphan over other cons, but I think to do it you're going to have to invest a little too with space and a few passes. I'd also suggest trying to figure out the space and how to allot it and then start talking with these other fan clubs and reaching out to them. I know I've said it elsewhere, there's a bunch of clubs I've never heard of that are going to be at WWC this weekend, get out there and network with them ASAP and start selling them on Cyphan and what it can do for them.

I will attempt to refrain from commenting on union and venue issue, which are considerable and, perhaps, the greatest issue with the Cantina. However, I will simply ask: Why can’t the hotel bartender simply serve drinks from behind the Cantina bar? It’s still them serving the drinks and no rules are getting broken. Alternately, what is wrong with a Cyphan staffer, acting as the “bartender” taking drink orders (mostly for show) and a “server” running the order to the real bartender? It’s more complicated, but it’s good for show and still doesn’t break any rules (what’s the difference if drinks are bought by a thousand individuals or a thousand drinks by one individual?).
If the Cantina is retained, I’d like to suggest a band or DJ for ambiance. Yes, I know there’s been a boom box, but there’s something to be said for something akin to Figrin Dan and the Modal Nodes being present.

Last year at the Westin.. they didn't have drinks AT the Cantina bar.. BUT.. the Hotel had a bar set up in the one corner of the same room and you simply bought the drinks from that bar...walked 15 feet over to the Cantina Bar and could drink your beverage at the bar...or one of the tables...
I thought that worked GREAT....
