Leveraging fan enthusiasm and loyalty is the ONLY way to insure building the Cyphan brand. Flyers on a table at a con are subject to the same marketing laws as direct mailers: if you get 0.1% response, it’s considered a phenomenal success. The best advertising also happens to be the cheapest (essentially free) and that IS word of mouth.
Consider my story. We (Nanette and myself) came out to Cypahn I just to help Jeff with a panel. We were hooked! We became fans of Cyphan. With no further contact or prompting from Michael or Jeff or anyone else involved with Cyphan, I made up my own flyers and distributed them to everyone I knew, at every convention I went to, co-workers; they didn’t just get handed a flyer, they got my story and enthusiasm – you cannot capture that in a 30 second TV ad or a flyer on it’s own.
So, as I suggested before, make up some PDFs of generic Cyphan flyers for us to print ourselves on cardstock as we need them. They should just contain the Cyphan logo, some pics, a small blurb about Cyphan and the website. Then, as guests are confirmed, the dates and venue are set, put out updated PDFs – full page and 11x17 (ledger/poster) – to hang up at comic book stores and such.
Really, you’re starting on the right track. You have to start NOW for next year. You can’t wait until, say, after the holidays, or after the dates are set and guests confirmed. Fandom is making their travel plans and con commitments the year before. Heck, this weekend would be a great time to be pushing Cyphan at WW and Flashback (Netter and I will be doing what we can at Flashback).

Mike, I want to let you know I talked this con up all day Friday and Saturday. I will also be doing it again for the short time I will be at WW today. I have to say I am a Cyphan Zealot! LOL I have billed it as a baby dragon con to get people to understand it easier ;-)

Thank you Erik! Word of mouth is the #1 reason why people go to Cyphan so that kind of help is invaluable!!! Troy - I will have a pdf of the Cyphan 3 flyer available on the site when it's all sorted out. I should have done that last yer!

Social networking sites like twitter, facebook, web page, etc is great. But it's not everything.
I feel there still needs to be some advertising somewhere, most likely in local publications, leaving fliers at comic book stores or visitng other venues.
Again, you're the marketing guru Bollow. so i hope we're all giving you something to chew on.

Hey Mike,
I've been MIA for a bit and have been trying to catch up on these wonderful ideas that have been flying back and forth between Facebook (FB) and the Board. Upon doing a bit of research, I've discoved that many Cons do not refer to the sale of their entrance tickets as 'tickets' but MEMBERSHIPSs. I truly think this would be a plus for two reasons: 1. The theme idea of travel and being a passenger will help promote this, and 2. Membership promotes the feeling of being a part of something, ownership and making one feel 'special'...and this is key in encouraging more new people to come to Cyphan. Just something to think about.

Twitter is better than Facebook right now. Facebook is getting eerily close to Myspace spam status. So be careful with pushing that. Twitter at least has to certify celebrities (when they request to be), so if you post a tweet with @-ing a celebrity who has twitter too and is coming to Cyphan (take Nicki Clyne, she was posting about Cyphan but not @ to Cyphan's twitter!) so pushing that and retweets helps tremendously and gains new followers. Facebook should remain a Likepage for Cyphan. You don't top off on 'fans' there as well as you can now tag fanpages in photos. I'm thinking I'm going to tag all my cyphan pics

Well, make sure there is one "official" Cyphan 3 event page - some event end up with a number of different event pages with a handful of "attending" people on each; kinda goofy. Keep your options open. For example, I don't do Twitter, so I'd have no idea what was going on if you abandoned FB.

Thing about fan pages on facebook, one must update pretty regularly. I know Bollow has done a fair amount to inform people of tickets/memberships (Thanks Cheeky), as well as hotel, parking, etc.
but what about updates on past celebrities like Nicki Clyne. What if she had a picture of her chilling on the california beach! i'm sure many fan boys would love that, or Richard Hatch eatinga burger as big as his head. Or (as Kearstin stated earlier) get the GF to give riddles to post and have people answer them for prizes like a shirt, or a one-day pass?
These ideas can be changed, it's just the thought to make the fan page something that people want to flock to.
Is there someone that can assist bollow on the fan page? I know many guys that may be able to help!
Twitter can be the same thing, you can post up 'exclusive/twitter only' content for those followers on twitter. Whether it's behind the scenes photos of the celebrties. Telling people that Bollow will be at "x" starbucks and the first person to buy him a vanilla chai latte will get a Cyphan promo poster. i dunno, just stuff that would make it funny and fun.

Twitter contests! People have them all the time. Ray Park just had one the other night giving away signed prints if you answered silly questions correctly.
(like, what other role did he have in Star Wars) lol

You heard it here first folks... Kearstin is the new Cyphan Media Coordinator! <thunderous applause>
She will be the go-to person for press releases, making TV, Radio and the papers aware of us, and also SOCIAL MEDIA like Twitter. She will have the password to the Cyphan Twitter account and be able to tweet whenever she feels like it. I am so bad at that...
She is also going to help me freshen up the look of the site!
Thank you Kearstin for stepping up!
