I actually think you should get the Gotham Finest's guys rounded up and do Riddles all over the place. WAY more than what they did with their booth. I LOVED THAT IDEA SO MUCH. I seriously was looking for the riddles everywhere lol
I think at this point already 2 years into Cyphan, it has already giving more of the impression as a Sci-Fi convention. Not that it entirely matters to me, because I'll dress up as whatever the fuck I want to anyway haha (I was a Disney Princess on Sunday, and that has nothing to do with anything this year). BUT for new attendants, I like the "Wrath of Con" theme. But don't include Star Trek because that will auto-affiliated. Those that know of Trek will get the pun, but, Wrath of Con at least substitutes general convention.
Dragoncon's first sentence on their site says: "Dragon*Con is the largest multi-media, popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the universe!"
Keywords: multimedia and universe lol aka BROAD and HUGE. (that's what she said).
So, I think staying away from specific sci-fi words might help you steer away from being labeled a sci-fi con.
Maybe specifying from the beginning that "each year has a different theme", it'll justify WHY it HAS been sci-fi, etc etc. Kind of like a scapegoat. LOL

Love the idea of Doctor 10 and the Voyage of the Damned idea. But if you had to choose between Remy (Rissa's boyfriend) or Harrison...Remy would be the one who has the voice and the mannerisms.

You know what? The accent is KEY, otherwise it comes of goofy and campy.

I added a POLL to the top of this thread. Let's vote on the title!

Michael, in choosing, we are voting for a title, right? Not the theme. In my suggestion, the two were not mutually exclusive. I only intended that the pub/bar/tavern be called World's End in reference to the Neil Gaiman story-line (I have since discovered that WoW has incorporated the World's End Tavern into its world, too).
OOH That gives me another idea! Your holosuite idea, with the different tavern/pub locations - call each one World's End but have the sign outside styled differently to reflect the interior theme (old west, futuristic, etc.)

The theme will be the star cruiser that goes into the time/space vortex.
All we are voting on is the title. River pointed out that "Voyage of the Damned" may make people think we are a horror con. I'm still liking that title though.

Voyage of the Damned sounds horror. World's End Tavern sounds like pirates.
I'm not voting on either lol

Every Doctor Who fan is going to associate it accordingly. However, it might be a good idea to try and find a name that is similarly evocative, but not identical. IDK. I'll have to think some more.

As much as I'll get shunned for this, but I don't really care for Doctor Who... at all. But that doesn't mean I can't see that it's HOT right now, so if you think it'll remain this popular as it's been this year, into next? Then go for it.

Voyage of the Damned sounds horror. World's End Tavern sounds like pirates. I'm not voting on either lol I agree, i'm just really concerned about confusing people. I thought maybe something like this: "Cyphan: Caught in a vortex!" Subtitle: When in the FRACK are they?!?!?" a little Dr. Who, little BSG, little Cyphan. I dunno. I love the cruise idea though. It's hard coming up with a title that encompasses what Cyphan is. Let's be honest. it's not like we can say one thing or another without it leaning heavily toward one genre or another. *Headdesk* *thud* -River

Well, Doctor Who predates Star Trek and is still going with new episodes, two spin offs, one of which has come to the US. Yeah, I think it's a safer bet than the US dollar.

I think it's already mostly labeled as Sci-Fi. So unless generalizing or changes happen NOW, you might as well promote as sci-fi.

I think Doctor Who, while indeed sci-fi, is a GREAT vehicle for the steam punk vein. It kind of bridges the gap between genres - sort of the point of Cyphan as well as the working theme for 2012.

Here is the only concern with doing Doctor Who related things. There is already a Doctor Who con, TARDIS, every November. I know there have been discussions with them in the past and we need to be careful what we do as to not step on their toes and create issues that we don't need. Don't get me wrong, if Bollow could get John Barrowman I would cough up some serious cash just to hang with him...
