Why not Firefly? We had Jewel Staite once, let's try for Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher or Alan Tudyk. Wizard had Morena Baccarin and maybe some day in a perfect world we could have Nathan Fillion (who uses the shit out of Twitter btw lol)

I want to stay away from a specific show as the theme. Non-fans will not be enthused about attending. Jewel didn't get the Chicago fans anyway.

Well she was very quiet like the whole time! I had more fun with Nicki Clyne because she was like OMG LETS PARTY AND DANCE. Where Jewel gave me this "don't step on my heels". haha
Well, I guess what I mean by Firefly, is more like steampunk western since y'all mentioned that earlier. Cowboys vs aliens lmao

I don't want to be the Gloomy Gus here, but I'm not sure I get the need for a "theme" before we have a focus. What is the focus of Cyphan? Costuming, right? How, then, does a ship to the stars mesh with the Steampunk costumers? Or Godzilla? Or Comic Book Characters? I honestly think we're putting the cart before the horse if we go all out on decorating the hotel rooms, pumping in sound effects, etc. if we target a theme that doesn't quite fit as much of the focus audience as we want. Don't get me wrong, if Cyphan was going to be all sci-fi space themed, then a ship to the stars is a GREAT idea. But not so much for other aspects of costuming. The reason the themed hotel works for Teslacon is that TC is aiming for Steampunk and Steampunk only. "Voyage of the Damned" sounds like horror. "World's End Tavern" sounds... I don't know what it sounds like, to be honest. To me, if you want to decorate the hotel, then do it in mutiple rooms like multiple holodecks -- one has a space theme, one has a comic book setting, one has a fantasy theme, etc. -- rather than decorating for one space cruiser theme. Just my two cents.

Look, I don't think it's a big mystery: Cyphan - "Science-Fiction and Fantasy UNITED." It's on the t-shirts. It's on the mugs. The Voyage of the Damned/Worlds End Tavern idea was born out of an idea to bridge all the different genres of fandom. You know, the UNITED part. If there are any other ideas how to do that, let's hear them.

Perhaps, instead of "Voyage of the Damned," which seems to be taking a lot of flack, what about another, more general tile: "Fantastic Voyage"? "Journey to the Unknown?" Or maybe "Lost in Time?"

Cyphan: Science Fiction and Fantasy United (in costuming).
I merely post that up to state what the con is about so I can derive something from it.
Now for me just writing stuff up here. random thoughts as they enter my head.
Journey to the end of the world? perhaps?
"Cowboy's Vs. Aliens' does have a ring to it, Unfortunately it's already being used in a major hollywood film title.
I like the idea of the different 'holodecks' for different themes. But would that be cumbersome? I mean essentially you'd have to have vendors that deal with those themes in those rooms? And of course the adjacent costuming group.
While Skyjammer does pose a good question. is the cruise ship theme feasible or even the 'holodeck rooms'?
Ugh, my brain is overloading, i'll have to sleep on this one.

The "Cowboy vs. Aliens" is a good theme, but I wouldn't lean heavy on it because it hasn't done well at the box office. I wouldn't go with anything more than moderate allusions.

And, really, what is Cosplay if not, on some level, a bit of acting or role playing? You want to feel that you are the character you dress as, or in the setting you style yourself after. That sort of mandates a theme/story.

I was joking on the Cowboys vs Aliens. I'm just saying that's what I think of when you say 'world's end tavern' lol
I'd like to specify the difference between cosplay and costuming.
I costume. I don't cosplay. I do not role play or get into character when I suit up. I do not do skits, I do not participate in things that require me to act out the part.
However, the WORD cosplay has just been filtered into "Dressing up" anyway regardless, and lots of people don't even KNOW that it stems from ROLE playing.
Dress up and get drunk is what cosplay means now. Let's face it.
I do like the idea of different themes putting yourself INTO the scene. Have a comic book panel background, have a space deck, etc etc. Maybe have some kind of gameshow, where people at membership registration "pick their world" and then we can have different badges to that, and then have an opening ceremony be a game show something!? Idk. RaMBLemeLEELee

I costume. I don't cosplay. Forgive my confusion.

Besides, I was thinking about the general populace. Thinking big picture, here.

lol That banner was from like 2009 LOL I got into it then and didn't know any better. I was a perfect example of the diluted definition of cosplay.
Where is that posted anyway? I no longer have that site domain either hahah
