As much as people say Wizard's changed a lot (and it has -- I miss the big display booths from Marvel and DC and Hasbro and Mattel), they're obviously doing something right because I think this year's Saturday was the biggest crowd they've ever had. They've traded in comic companies and booths and what not for celebrities -- and it's worked. They could expand their floor space and still fill it all. People still go to it even as others bemoan how corporate it's become.
And I don't think C2E2 is bigger than Wizard. The second year was definitely bigger than the first, but Wizard still is a bigger convention in terms of floor space and attendance. But C2E2 also has different things to offer -- fewer pop culture guests, more comic companies and booths.
I loved C2E2. I loved parts of Wizard. I will still go to both if possible. But I also loved Cyphan and want to be part of it. But you gotta move that July date if you can. Two weeks out from Wizard? A lot of people will go to the bigger convention that has more guest stars and photo ops and bigger dealer rooms.
Plus, there's Dragon*Con in early September, AND in August you have Star Wars CVI to think as well. Put some distance between Cyphan and everything else in August/September. I don't know what your contract calls for, but you need some breathing room between Cyphan and WW.
When I helped run a convention, it was held two months ahead of the competing convention, and I saw a lot of people go to both. Had it been two weeks before, there would have been little overlap.

The effects of this year's cons is not yet known. Next year might see a big drop off in WW attendees and a big up-tick in C2E2. Always in motion is the future.

May would actually be really good! It might not be as hot as it was this year. It won't be real close to the other cons. It's well BEFORE WW. Great idea, IMO

Yeah just be careful with C2E2. All they have is "Spring 2012" listed so watch out!

We are locked in to our July date in 2012 but I have told them that another weekend (I can even do a different hotel) would be good in 2013. The problem is that there is always SOMETHING.
Capricon - Feb C2E2 - March or April ACEN - May Duckon - June (these aren't our people but it's still noteworthy) SDCC - July G-FEST - July Wizard - August Flashback - August D*C - September
The fact is that as we grow, more people will attend and realize "wow! Cyphan is way more fun than the corporate cons!" and we will grow little by little every year. There is a demographic of costumers that ONLY care about having their picture taken, and we will never get those people away from C2E2 or Wizard. They have ego-orgasms everytime a flashbulb goes off.
A big positive about Wizard this year was fb was full of "man, that wasn't as fun as Cyphan" comments on Monday morning. That means something.
C2E2 and Wizard are Bud Light. We are a craft brew! It takes a while to get people to try you but when they do they won't accept less!

Ok i like the whole Bud light versus "Crafted Brew" analogy. Cuz that's exactly what Cyphan is. However, I will say that July doesn't seem to be a bad month. SDCC - Cool, but EXPENSIVE AS HELL if you don't live in CA. G-Fest - Never heard of it. So july sounds awesome! and it's my birthmonth too! LOL But you're right, there is always something, personally as long as it's not a huge con 'within Illinois' I think you stand a better chance of being noticed. Wizard, C2E2, Acen, Flashback are the ones that come to mind immediately. As long as you're a good distance from them, i wouldn't worry about SDCC. -River

Capricon - Feb C2E2 - March or April ACEN - May Duckon - June (these aren't our people but it's still noteworthy) SDCC - July G-FEST - July Wizard - August Flashback - August D*C - September Well right, but I don't think all of those are your direct competition either. Right now you need to focus on staying away from the big local guns, Wizard & C2E2. I'd add DC in there too to be safe. Probably Acen too. SDCC I don't think is that big of an issue, its a draw for sure, but its also a gigantic expense and a lot of local people don't go, at least not every year. I think its better to stay away from it, but its not as big of a competition due to the high cost & investment it takes to get there. These other cons I think are a great place to go and get a booth and preach the gospel of Cyphan.
