Are we talking just photo/comic art, or writers, too?

I want to say both, but I feel art is easier and "faster" to "sell".

I only ask because I picked up a bookmark from a table at Cyphan I for Chloe Neill's Chicago Vampire series. I was hooked and just went this summer to a book signing she was at. At that singing was another author, Christina Henry, who has a similarly themed series - that series is set in Chicago and she's local. www.christinahenry.net/www.chloeneill.com/

waitedesigns.deviantart.com/He's a good friend of mine and he's local. He's currently working for Image and did some uncredited work on Wonder Woman as well as some pre production work on the Green Lantern film. He's good for panels too, especially if you want to do a digital inking panel.

Now are you talking about an artist's alley or a section for artists at the con?
An Artist's Alley usually consists of a small section of free tables that are given out by lottery each day, and once you leave your table it is back up for grabs. That's the way I am used to seeing them work.
A section of artists would be tables they would have to buy.

This is Sparrow on Van's name, making an addition... Is this for celebrities or for regular artists for an artist's alley? Some of those guys are pretty famous. A suggestion: Ericca Thornhill www.calmthestorm.net/~ericca/She writes fantasy and science fiction, isn't real well known, but was very nice to talk to.

Hmm, I guess defining either of them, Bollow, what would YOU want to do?

We just downsized our dealer hall space quite a bit so we won't have any free tables. I suppose I could look into an additional room just for use as Artists Alley but that of course costs money... <sigh>

I think for a con as small as this, with such freaking reasonable table prices, you should forgo artist's alley for another couple years. Let the popularity of the convention grow and THEN open a lottery based artist's alley.
You can still have a section of the dealer's hall to put people who are specifically artists, but don't put, say, a famous comic book artist next to a lesser known furry artist. Put that comic book artist on your list of celebrities. If he wants to sketch from his table (unlikely in most cases) that's fine, but it means less chance of the lesser known artists getting blocked out because of his line.

I guess since I have the personal contacts for most of the people I listed, wouldn't hurt to see what numbers they ask for, would it? Maybe the "friend discount"? lol

I agree with Sparrow,
The tables are very reasonable compared to a number of cons.
I say we open it up to a few well known local artist (I can think of at least two). that are up and coming.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE J. Scott Campbell (even composed some of my pin up images based on his illustrations) but i think he either gets a free table at cons or charges. one of the two. Dave Dorman, same thing.
but then again, i don't know the ins and outs of artists and if they demand a fee or a free table.
if the room is going to be small and Bollow only has so many booths/tables. he may not be considering that option.

Really, a lot of the more famous artists do not draw at conventions anymore, just do autographs, which is why I suggested we ask them as celebrities. I do know a guy who is a comic book artists and iirc still lives in the area, he might be willing to come and do signings and stuff...I'll ask him about it sometime.

Hey Sparrow, Educate me here a bit, what/who is IIRC? I didn't know that artists no longer have that draw. I do remember waiting in line for Bill Tucci's autograph on my Shi comic years ago. Now i see him with no line. One day i'll stop and buy a print and reminesce the Shi years. So many comic artists I never met. I know some of you may gauff but here's my list: Rob Liefeld Wendy/Richard Pini Eric Larsen Todd Macfarlane (Albeit I think he would charge or something) Joe Quesada Frank Miller Stan Lee (but i see him charging Bollow) those are just some off the top of my head. -River
