As a social space, the Cantina was too cramped and at odds with the DJ/dance/Ball activities. It works best either for a con suite decoration or for a cash bar space (hotel run) set far enough from the dance floor for people to be able to converse. Compare to the MHF set up. Sticking it in an alcove w/out booths killed it- it just ate space.

I agree except that the DJ/dance/Ball problem is only during the ball. The Cantina is up all weekend as a place to chill and talk and whatnot. Let's face it, the Cantina of Star Wars was unrealistic. Have you ever been in a bar with a live band (or DJ) and a dance floor where you could hear someone sitting across from you to have a conversation?

You know what, bottom line, if the Hotel won't allow the con to serve refreshments at the Cantina and won't work with you to have their own servers behind the bar, it's just window dressing and probably not worth it.

First and foremost,
My thinking is this, the hotel didn't want to serve drinks at the makeshift cantina because it's not their and they could be held 'liable' if something were to happen. Exactly what i'm not sure, but they hotel would have to pay for anything.
Second, it's not like you can get a band to play there for 3 days straight. or did you just mean for the 3 nights? that would be an additional cost and if Union people are charging to have stuff set up, plugged in, and then broke down. That gets pretty $$$$.
So hopefully that explains a few things.
If Cyphan-3 decides to have a band, dj, etc., here's an idea.
There should be a number of 'local' bands that wouldn't mind performing for an hour. maybe two. IF, and ONLY IF, you decide to go with some sort of 'cantina' like place, maybe put out some feelers for bands who wouldn't mind performing, it would give them a place to debut and try out their music. There's gotta be tons of bands in the chicago area looking for a break.
again, just a though, it would keep costs low too.
that's one way we could have 'some' entertainment during the con.

That's exactly what I was getting at, River - bands that want to perform just to perform. And, when they aren't then you play the pre-recorded stuff.
Actually, what would be REALLY cool, though maybe cost prohibitive, just like there is the Greedo set up for photos, having a mock up of the Modal Nodes on a dais.

I'd rather have a DJ that plays popular good dance music that drunk people can get down to, than a band that has one sound that mostly likely isn't any good for three nights straight that probably will only attract cougars lol

First, I think DJ is the only serious plan for the ball - band was just a suggestion if there's a group that just want's to hang out and jam.
Second, what's wrong with cougars??

ROFLMAO!!! COUGARS! lolol
Sorry that really made me laugh hard.
ok. Well I agree with Troy. The Dj's should only be toward the early to later evening on fri and sat.
As I had stated the bands could be a variety, let them play for an hour and then leave. If people like them, they'll buy their cd. and one band could be rock, another could be hip hop, another could be crooners etc. Chicago is littered with a music scene that's pretty impressive (then again nearly any city is).
Look at it this way.
it's 2pm, a band is playing in the 'catina room', you charge $5.00 to 'non-con' people who've already purchased their pass. They sit down to listen to the band and buy a few drinks.
VOILA! Not only does that help in the cost of the electricty (which I beleive the band should pay a portion of) but it also helps go toward the cons funds.
I hope this makes more sense. If it's during the hours of say 11 am to 6pm. most of us will be working at the con, attending a panel, geting autographs, etc.
if a band is REAALY awesome (especially some cover bands) Bollow could have them come back and perform either that night or at the next Cyphan.
just my thoughts.

Well for a band, they're going to need to be treated just like vendors. Never ever assume audiences will buy a band's cd. Especially local, especially not cover band. So they're going to want a cut, they're going to want a 'guarantee', and all that.
I honestly think we would be fine without a band.

We can't do a band... too loud.
Our new ballroom is the O'Hare ballroom and it's smaller, with a lower ceiling than what we had last year. There will be NO Cantina at Cyphan 3.

It really doesn't make sense to do the cantina under the restrictions the hotel imposes. Besides, with the holodeck thing, it's kind of redundant.

The Ball is the main event, so YES to that! Not sure on drink prices but I am trying to get them to lower my food and beverage revenue minimum. Once the con grows, this problem will solve itself. While we are still smaller, I have to sweat that number out.

There needed to be 'key' activities at the Bar itself. Just having it there is a draw, but there has to be something going on there if it is going to be a 'destination' for crew to go to. I know its a fun photo shoot, but I would think a three breasted barmaid would keep people there...just for the 'gawk' factor....and no...I don't plan on making THIS outfit anytime soon....sorry.
