Lords and Ladies -
I agree with everybody who says we need to focus Cyphan into a particular thing, and that is clearly costuming. It's great to be the Riddler on Saturday and a Sandtrooper on Sunday. This is who we are and all future Cyphan materials, including the website will make it clear.
I am also thinking about a theme for the next one. Feel free to tell me if it's lame.
We are moving to the part of the hotel that has the giant atrium dome (where we went after we got kicked out of Kearstin's room and where the yoda scene was shot in the promo video). All those rooms will be ours and every time I see it I am reminded of a cruise ship... or star liner...
What if we made the theme for Cyphan 3 a "voyage" on the Star liner Olympic? Badges would be passenger tickets (1st class, 2nd class, etc) and we could decorate the space with props and things that fit the theme. It would be easy to pipe in sound effects too - they did this at the last TeslaCon and it was neat. Staff could get together simple Star Liner crew costumes that match, etc.
Cool or unnecessary??

Interesting. I like it, I think it has potential to play with.
So do you get to be Captain?

So the website and materials would all be related to this "voyage" on the Star Liner. I am digging this idea very much but we need to make sure that our friends who cosplay as superhero's, elves, zombies, etc. don't feel like it's sci-fi only. Aside from spelling that out in BOLD LETTERS on on the site - any ideas?
Other ideas:
- props related to the theme including signage around the con. - piped in sound effects and ship's announcements. - some interactive stuff like maybe a murder mystery?
A bunch of these things worked well at TeslaCon and of course countless cons before that have done a "voyage" theme.
Thoughts?

If anybody has OTHER theme ideas... please toss them out! - a tribute to a classic movie or show? - Alternate Universes? - Let's get naked?

Maybe it might be best to go in a different direction since the last two Cyphans have been sci-fi heavy? Not that I have any ideas though, my expertise is sci-fi...

Themes, hmmm, let me see...
Swords, Sorcerers, and High Society A Kingly Reception A Voyage Across Time (playing on the favored theme) Pirates (easy, over done though) Ninjas (of course, to follow pirates) Star Trekkin' (Cyphan 3, the wrath of con!) Flashback Carnival (or, to be punny, "con"ival) The Great Escape (think Houdini and magicians) Noir

Just some random thoughts (Literally)
Fantastic Voyage! (no not that one....) I second the Star Trekkin.
Flashback is taken by a horror con,
I am thinking maybe something to do with a malfunctioning "Warp gate shaped like a doughnut with glyphs on it) ;-) In fact I have plans for that somewhere....
Continuity Clash!
In Space no one can hear you party....
MIGHTY fine shindig...

Perhaps the Star Liner has come out of jump-space and stabilized on a dimensional vortex (perhaps created by a Blue Box) into which people and creatures can wander from an array of worlds, Battlestar Galactica, Marvel and DC Coninutities, Dr. Who, Wheel of Time, you get the idea.

I guess the question I have is did you have a good participation by BSG groups this year? If so...go for it..

This is a brilliant idea and I have an idea how to weave it all together. The key is in storytelling… Star Trek: The Experience, when it was operating in Las Vegas, operated under the theme that it was a “Time Base,” a station that touched multiple points in time allowing characters from different eras, from Enterprise to Voyager, to interact with civilians from the 21st century (the patrons). The Star Trek book series Captains’ Table followed a similar theme, allowing captains of different eras to meet and share tales over stories. DC Comics has a similar idea in the Vertigo line, introduced in Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series; a pub called "Worlds' End, a free house", as sign outside declares it; one of four inns where travelers between dimensions, between realms and kingdoms, shelter during reality storms — the consequences of particularly momentous events. And from these you can weave your tapestry…. Something is happening; we don’t know what, but it has repercussions throughout the multiverse (what it really is, is Cyphan 3!). The World’s End pub is coexisting, temporally and spatially, with the main bar on the interstellar cruise liner Olympic (presumably of the same cruise line as the Titanic of Doctor Who’s “Voyage of the Damned” - upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fd/Voyage_of_the_Damned.jpg). As such, characters and patrons from every genre throughout history can meet and share a voyage while they wait out the “time storm.” As for the costuming of staff, a lot of inspiration could be drawn from Voyage of the Damned. In other words, steam punk apparel is exactly what you want, and most of the staff already has. Troy

Oh, by the way, the idea of it being an interstellar cruise ship makes the idea of the holosuites work perfectly. You did mention the idea of groups setting those rooms up ... what about making them the "Fan Tables?" I was thinking of having my Klingon group get a Fan Table next year and I could totally see them decking it out Klingon style with a photo-op of a bat'leth battle with a Klingon and such. I could see the Gotham's Finest Chicago guys doing an Arkham Asylum theme maybe (I'm gonna suggest it to them!)

I need to second the voyage of the damned idea! All creatures of all walks of life may find themselves aboard this cruise ship visiting different realities, time, and space. Definitely a cruise boarding pass is needed as a badge. Opening ceramonies can be a welcome from the ship's captain in a captain costume and introduce the VIPs and some of the activities that will be hosted during the voyage!
